We addressed earlier on all of the major global and national events that have impacted on people’s lives in 2020 and wrote up this article on the best pet friendly accomodation QLD.
Specifically relating to Queensland, all of the issues mentioned earlier came on top of several natural disasters through late-2019 and the first 6-months of 2020.
The massive bushfires hit many states with such a huge force, losing so many lives, homes, wildlife, habitats, communities and businesses.
Queensland was included in this horrendous bush fire disaster with massive fires in places like the Gold Coast hinterland, Stanthorpe, Toowoomba region and Peregian where they copped 2 separate large fire fronts.
The one thing needed to put out the fires, apart from the amazing work of people fighting the fires, was water.
The problem then was that many areas in the South east corner of Queensland along with the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales then copped a deluge of rain, and on more than one occasion resulting in erosion and flooding in places.
Mother Nature works in her own way though and despite that rain in the lower part of the state there have been ongoing drought areas stretching back into the years in parts of Queensland.
Even the last statistics from 1 May 2020 still put 65% of the state in drought.
This state, like our country, is a land of extremes. 2020 has provide that in so many ways.
There is a great saying that I have heard and that I like; ‘The most important things in life aren’t things.’
It is people that really matter and we have seen vivid negative things such as destruction, deaths, even fighting to get toilet paper, that all go into that sad image of events.
On the positive side of things though we have seen such incredible work by all of the emergency services and medical staff all around the country.
Let’s not overlook the fantastic work of volunteers helping others as well as nursing all the hurt and distressed animals.
People have done such wonderful things too with fundraising and entertainment and arts events by ordinary people and celebrities, that have been put on to thank others, to boost morale and to raise even more funds.
These tough times have also brought out the best in humanity as well and that is something we should hold onto and to celebrate.
There has been a great initiative in the media recently where the theme was to ‘holiday at home’, as a way of helping people out after the bushfires. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on that gaining much momentum.
Border closures, businesses closed, parks closed, flight restrictions, all played their part in that situation over and above all the health and economic causes.
However, not everyone has lost their job and a holiday at home is something that they can still afford.
We would like to urge those people to still ‘holiday at home’ this year, and next probable.
Make sure that any border of property closures have ended before you make your booking.

When planning and booking your dog friendly accommodation in Queensland be realistic about how far you can travel.
This is a big State and there is so much to see and that may mean more than one visit.
To put things into perspective about Queensland as a destination:
- Just in area QLD covers 1.853 Million km2. That makes it 2nd only to Western Australia and equivalent to the combined areas of NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS and ½ of SA. That’s huge!
- It has around 7,000km of coastline, of which there is about 2,100km just covering the East coast from Coolangatta through to Cooktown and that is about the same as a return trip from Brisbane to Sydney.
- Despite the area size the total state population is just over 5 Million, or about a similar amount to either Sydney or Melbourne.
- Check the stats on weather; temperature, humidity and rainfall by month when doing your planning. Such a huge State there is a wide range of weather patterns. Remember; the further North you travel the more hot, humid and rainy it can be as with any tropical area the rainy season is often over Summer.
- There can be different wildlife to what you experience at home, so be conscious of snakes, sea snakes, stone fish, mosquitos, dingo’s, different types of jellyfish, sharks, cane toads and crocodiles. Be careful where you stay and the activities you plan.
- Beware too that there are restricted breeds in Queensland as at September 2020;

This back to basics campground is about 48km North of Bundaberg and was developed by the Bundaberg Regional Council.
It is close to Rules Beach and Miara.
First things first; dogs are permitted (a maximum of 2 dogs per campsite) and they must be confined to camp or controlled on a leash at all times.
If overnight camping it is in tents or camper trailers only as caravans/RV’s etc. are not permitted.

Fisherman’s Beach Holiday Park – Emu Park (Yeppoon region)
Emu Park is out on the coast from Rockhampton and just South of Yeppoon, which is the largest tourist spot in this area known as the Capricorn Coast.

Don’t be put off by the name containing ‘Van park’ in its name.
This is a dog friendly park that also offers powered and unpowered camping sites.
When it comes to pet friendly accommodation Townsville caravan parks such as this are a more economical option; leaving more money to spend on your sightseeing.
They do have a swimming pool and that will come in handy as it sure gets hot up here.

Townsville can get busy; it is the 4th largest city in QLD after all and over twice the population of Mackay for example.
Aside from tourism and hospitality it is a hub for education with a large university as well as a regional hub for government departments and has a large military presence.
Just offshore is Magnetic Island, which is almost a satellite suburb of Townsville.
While it is World Heritage listed and does contain many National parks, there are many other beaches where you can walk your dog.
It could also be worth a short stay, or take the ferry across for the day but make sure your dog is muzzled for the ferry ride.

Mission Beach Hideaway Holiday Village
This beautiful town has been hit by Mother Nature twice in recent years, but rather than bush fires the destruction here was from massive cyclones.

Daintree Rainforest Village – Diwan
About a 2-hour drive North of Cairns is the Daintree Ferry that takes you to the Northern side of the Daintree River; the gateway to the Daintree National park and places such as Cape Tribulation.
This is Crocodile country; you can sometimes see them on the riverbank from the ferry so be vigilant, read and obey all the warning signs and keep your dog on a lead and close to you.
They love rivers and creeks but will venture out into beach areas too and even locals say “don’t swim except in a swimming pool”.
However, to venture that far North it is a place to experience the amazing Rainforest region.
Finding a place such as Daintree Rainforest Village and discover that they are dog friendly and have a choice of powered and unpowered sites is something quite unique.
Remember; as this is largely untouched rainforest there is all sorts of wildlife and your dog needs to be under your control at all times.
Another interesting point is that as the crow flies you are actually closer to Pt Moresby in PNG here than you are to Mackay. What a huge state QLD is!

Karumba Point Holiday and Tourist Park – overlooks Gulf of Carpentaria
Near the shoreline of the Gulf of Carpentaria, famous for its amazing sunsets, Barramundi, Crabs and Crocodiles is this amazing small town.

Noonbah Station Bush Camping – SW from Longreach
One of the must-see places in Outback Queensland is Longreach, home of the QANTAS Founders Museum, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, indigenous history, tours of local rivers and outback and some incredible photo opportunities as a record of your stay.
If you are in that region another experience would be to camp at a working station such as Noonbah; camping without facilities in amazing spots under trees and easy access to water on the 128,000-acre working property.
The station is dog friendly for well-controlled pets, but make sure you discuss this with them when making your booking online with the station (book using the link and pay on arrival, but Note: they don’t have EFTPOS, but a campsite is an amazing $10 per vehicle, per night).
If you want a bit more luxury there is also the Old Schoolhouse available to hire.
The last 56km of road to the station is unsealed, but don’t let that put you off what will be a once in a lifetime experience.

Sandstone Park Camping Ground – Carnarvon Gorge
Carnarvon Gorge is about 30km long and is set in the Carnarvon Gorge National Park, famous for its stunning scenery, wildlife, indigenous history and great walks and places to swim. Dogs are not permitted in the actual National Park.
However, just a 5-minute drive from the entrance where the major walking tracks commence is Sandstone Park, the only dog friendly place to stay in the area. You can even hire kennels by the day (bookings essential), so that you can leave your dog secure at the campground while you are off exploring for the day.
For campers, the only have unpowered sites for your tent, or your swag if that’s your preferred overnight experience. Remember to discuss your dog requirements prior to booking. It’s not always easy to find pet friendly accommodation Far Western Queensland can be a long way between stopovers. This area is very popular because of the Carnarvon Gorge; finding a property like this is a great asset for the area and the travelers.

Killarney View Cabins and Caravan Park – SE from Warwick
Killarney is a small rural town with a population of around 1,000. There is rugged scenery, combined with rolling green fields, proximity to vineyards; there’s even a Lavender Farm nearby. It is also around 10km from the breathtaking Queen Mary Falls. Condamine Gorge is also nearby.
The Caravan park is set on around 5-acres and are dog friendly; welcoming dogs onto their caravan and camping sites. When booking also confirm with them the road status as some are 4WD only.

Bargara Beach Caravan Park – Bundaberg area
Bargara Beach is just a short drive from Bundaberg. Aside from the beach it is also famous for the Mon Repos Turtle Centre and Conservation Park.
Depending on the time of the year you are visiting you may be lucky enough to witness the female turtles laying their eggs, or a few months after see the hatchlings emerging from the sand and making their way to the ocean.
Bundaberg also has some interesting historical buildings around the city, the Bundaberg Run Distillery, The Barrel – Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, Hinkler Hall of Aviation and the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.
This Caravan Park is right on the beachfront and is dog friendly with a choice of powered or unpowered sites. There are even concrete slab sites for larger caravans or RV’s.

Captain Cook Holiday Village – Seventeen Seventy
The town of 1770 is at the end of a peninsula it shares with Agnes Water. Surrounded by water, you look out across the Coral Sea to the East and back to the West across the ocean to Eurimbula National Park, making for amazing sunsets and photo opportunities.
This Holiday Village has powered caravan sites as well as the unpowered camping sites (plus various cabins, villas and bungalows) throughout their 6.25-acre property.
They are dog friendly at the caravan and camping sites only.
Although the area is surrounded by ocean there is also a swimming pool onsite and a secluded surf beach nearby.

Tannum Sands is just South of the city of Gladstone and is a good gateway to head North to Rockhampton or West through Biloela and beyond.

The Camping park is situated on around 150-acres of semi tropical forest on the Whitsundays Passage. It has direct beach access to what is a great fishing spot. There is a lovely pool and the grounds are very lush.

Cardwell Beachcomber Motel and Tourist Park
Cardwell is a small town about midway between Townsville and Cairns that has taken more than its share of severe cyclone damage in recent years. You get amazing views from the mainland, across the passage to Hinchinbrook Island; itself a National Park and therefore domestic animals are not permitted. However, back on the mainland there are nearby waterfalls and freshwater swimming holes plus amazing fishing and crabbing.

Tropic Breeze Caravan Park – Port Douglas
Port Douglas is a beautiful spot with so many tourist attractions to see and experience such as getting out onto the Great Barrier Reef, beach walks along Four Mile Beach, or the amazing Wildlife Habitat.
It is one of those places that has some stunning and luxurious resorts as well as a lot of holiday homes, apartments and units available for holiday rental and because of that attracts everyone from backpackers through to many wealthy tourists, celebrities.
Even Bill Clinton stayed here a few years back.
We wanted to include a Caravan Park in this section as a way of showing that you don’t always have to stay in a luxury resort to be able enjoy the same local environment. In terms of pet friendly accommodation Far North Queensland has some great properties such as this caravan park in Port Douglas.
The park has a lovely pool and you are really close to the beach as well as a short walk to the main shopping street with all its cafés and restaurants as well as a major supermarket.
There are powered and unpowered sites. A $50 cash deposit applies and the park requests that you get your dog approved before making your booking as they only allow a set number of dogs (restrained) onsite daily. In Western Queensland there are 3 towns, Richmond, Hughenden and Winton that form what is known as the Dinosaur Trail with each town having a Dinosaur Centre or Museum. Some centres even sell a permit so that you can fossick and maybe find something ancient.

The park has stunning views over a local lake and has 3 unpowered sites, 9 powered grass sites and 33 powered drive through sites. Matilda Country Tourist Park – Winton
Winton is the largest of the 3 towns included in the above mentioned Dinosaur Trail triangle. In addition to the Dinosaur theme there are plenty of other things to experience in this area such as the indigenous history and art, the famous Royal Open-Air Cinema, Arno’s Wall, Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, Dinosaur Stampede National Monument and many natural attractions.
