Spread the love
Our two labs love these as an after dinner snack. After cooking them in the oven the result is a genuinely crispy, hard snack, with hints of apple and turkey which are dog friendly.
The ingredients in this home made easy dog biscuit recipe are simple staple items, but the emphasis is on using fresh and organic products.
You can use organic apples if you wish and low fat turkey sausages if your pooches are picky eaters.

- 3 cloves Garlic Chopped
- 1/4 pound Sweet Italian turkey sausage
- 1 cup Unbleached flour
- 1 cup Rolled oats
- 2 tsp Baking powder
- 1/2 Green apple Coarsely chopped
- 1/2 cup Organic free-range chicken broth
Instructions
- In a small skillet, heat the olive oil and sauté the garlic over low heat. Remove the sausage casing and add the sausage meat to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break sausage apart into little crumbles. Cook till sausage bits are browned and nearly crunchy. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Preheat the oven to 325ºF. (162.8°C)
- Whisk the flour, rolled oats, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl.
- Empty the sausage bits, garlic, and oil into a glass measuring cup. Add the chopped apple. Pour the chicken broth into the pan and scrape up the brown bits. Pour the chicken broth and bits into the apple sausage mixture. Stir with a fork until combined.
- Make a well in the flour and pour in the sausage mixture. Mix on medium speed using a paddle attachment.
- Turn the dough out onto a slightly floured surface and gently knead. Roll the dough ¼-inch thick, and cut the biscuits into desired shapes with cookie cutters.
- Place the biscuits on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and bake 12– 15 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave the biscuits in another 20– 30 minutes. Remove them from oven, cool them on a baking rack, and store them in a cookie tin.
Notes
If you are lucky enough to have a farmer’s market nearby, buy your sausage in bulk. That way, it will already be out of the casing.
