We are writing this guide for pet friendly road trips Tasmania for people that need dog friendly holiday idea’s in TAS.
As we write this section of our guide Tasmania is just starting to reopen its borders to some mainland states, after being completely closed to the mainland for some time.
Tasmania is the only State or Territory in Australia that has conditions regarding bringing your dog onto the island.
The reason for this is that Tasmania is the only State that is free of Hydatids; a tapeworm that can also affect humans.
As a result, all dogs entering Tasmania must be free of the disease.

Situated on the east side of the river between the Airport and Hobart CBD this motel is close to the sights and sounds of Hobart and transport links for your road trip.

River Front Estate – Huonville
Situated 38KM south of Hobart, Huonville is a town on the Huon River.
It makes a great base if you are wanting your road trip to go to the far south of Tasmania.
This historical homestead was built in the late 1800’s and is still owned by members of the original family who lived there.
It is fully equipped and consists of 3-bedrooms and 1-bathroom.
The do have broadband internet and TV (Cable and Satellite). It is a no smoking property.

Glencoe Country Bed & Breakfast – Barrington (SW of Devonport)
Around 21KM SW of Devonport is the small town of Barrington; when we say small, the population was around 200 at the last Census.
The area is rich in native flora and fauna, offering gorgeous views of the landscape.
They are pet friendly and you should discuss this prior to making your booking.
If approved, small house-trained pets are allowed in the rooms.
There is a fenced yard for dogs.
Care is needed when driving on the property due to pets and farm animals.

Elm Trees Accommodation – Ross
Adjacent to the Macquarie River, the small historic town of Ross is situated around 78KM south of Launceston and 118KM north of Hobart.
There are many registered historic building and structures in the area, including the convict-built bridge over the river.

The Waterfront – Wynyard
Situated on the NW coast of Tasmania, around 17KM from Burnie is the small rural town of Wynyard.
Prominent on the ocean front is the flat-topped Table Cape.
Depending on what time of the year you are travelling you will be awestruck by the millions of Tulip flowers in bloom during Spring.
They are a major industry, with blooms shipped throughout Australia and overseas.

The town of Queenstown has a long history in mining both Gold and Copper.
It has left the area looking like a moonscape as a result.
It is the largest town in the western region of Tasmania.

Mount Stuart is a suburb of Hobart close to the city and the Botanical Gardens.
Werndee is a federation style mansion offering a number of different accommodation options.
Of these, 2-styles are available as pet friendly; Griffon (a 2-bedroom ground floor apartment) and Wren Cottage.

Coalmines Escape – Saltwater River (near Port Arthur)
Coalmines Escape is dog friendly, subject to prior approval and availability.
It is a newly built 4-bedroom house, set on 5-acres with its own private beach, which is the ideal scenic settings for pet friendly road trips Tasmania.

It is a great base while you explore the Convict Trail as well as the UNESCO World Heritage listed Port Arthur and Coal Mines.

Roosters Rest – Port Sorell
Port Sorell is a town on Tasmanias north west coast, around 20KM from Devonport.
The area is great for fishing, or enjoying the lovely white sand beaches.
For foodies, there are lots of farmgate sales, orchards, a chocolate factory, vineyards, cafés and restaurants to explore and enjoy.
Roosters Rest is surrounded by lovely gardens and bushland setting on the outskirts of Port Sorell.

Deloraine is situated in the central north, around 50KM west of Launceston and 52KM south of Devonport.
The Meander River flows through the town, adding natural beauty to a town that also has a heritage-listed streetscape. A picture postcard spot.

Zeehan Bush Camp – West Coast
Zeehan is a west coast town, north of Strahan and Queenstown and around 139KM SW of Burnie.
There is mine history through the town and the valleys surrounding it.
In its heyday it was nicknamed “Silver City”.
The Zeehan Bush Camp is small, and consists of Cabin, Glamping and Camping options.
They are pet friendly however, you will need to contact them prior to making any booking.

Kerrellie Cottages – Strahan
This laid-back town makes and ideal base while you explore the Tasmanian wilderness.
Your hosts Kerry and Kellie have 4 different properties around the town; all are pet friendly.
One cottage is an old Church conversion, another is the former Police Superintendents 2-bedroom cottage and the 1-bedroom Sir John Cottage.
At the time of writing the 1-bedroom Henty cottage was closed for renovations.
What a great opportunity to stay in such historical properties.

Pet friendly resorts Tasmania
Despite extensive research that included in-depth investigation through all Tasmanian online marketing we could find no resorts at all in Tasman that are dog friendly.
There are some lovely resorts in stunning locations in Tasmania. In fairness, most of properties are in or bordering National Parks and World Heritage sites, so the actual decision regarding “no dogs allowed” is not a decision made by the individual properties.
However, there are so many other types of properties that are dog friendly; we will continue on with our journey to highlight as many as possible for you.
